DESCRIPTION

The medium of photography is undergoing rapid change. Being a photographer today means more than just producing work alone. This tutorship aims to help to create personalized paths for students and professionals in their early career.

Developed and curated by Davide Monteleone in collaboration with Spazio Labo’, the tutorship includes a starting package of six interactive group seminars and four one-to-one meetings with prominent lecturers within the period of six months, aiming to cultivate new talents in documentary photography and visual storytelling. In addition to this package you can add to the program as many one-to-one extra meetings as you wish with the lectures and other additional guests that will join the tutorship along its course.

The tutorship takes the form of a customizable training course specifically designed for visual storytellers in their early career who seek an individual coaching process. This innovative formula, the long-term structure and the direct interaction with international professionals of the field will allow each participant to progress and offer the opportunity for an extensive understanding of the photographic industry.

Overcoming the basic notion of photography, the course aims to stimulate discussion on contemporary narrative, photographic languages, curatorship, storytelling, and career development. As such, good knowledge in contemporary photography and the ongoing production of a project are essential requirements for admission.

Based on their reliable experience in the educational field, Spazio Labo’ and Davide Monteleone will cooperate to guarantee to both participants and lecturers the development of a functional learning program, specifically designed for everyone’s tasks, where all the practical and administrative aspects will be managed directly by the school’s staff.

Davide Monteleone will coordinate the class throughout the full period of the tutorship.

SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM

The starting package consists of a total of 6 group seminars and 4 one-to-one sessions organized as follows:

Day 1 | Group session | 8 hrs

Discussion on the narrative structure of long-term projects. Beginning with his personal experience, he goes over different narrative forms in photography and different methods to articulate work. Introduction of strategies to develop a powerful story.

Day 2 | Group session | 8 hrs

Participants’ projects are presented, examined and discussed through an accurate analysis of each work.

All the sessions at Spazio Labo’ in Bologna will be also live-streamed for students unable to attend.

Group session: lecture followed by Q&A | 4 hrs

Hester training will address various practical aspects of the working relationship between photographer and curator in different institutional settings. This will range from the selection and production of artworks (budgeting and fundraising, conceptual framing of the work within an exhibition framework) to exhibition design and contracts with hosting institutions. Another part of the tutorship will be dedicated to a more fundamental process regarding the what, why and where of photographic presentations in a contemporary context.

Individual session | 20 mins each | to be scheduled and arranged in advance with the lecturer

Questions about the proposals, portfolio reviews and support to the participants’ efforts. Specific topics to be arranged between the guest and the student.

Group session | 8 hrs overall

Introduction to practical and commercial aspects of the photographer’s work, such as fieldwork, the editing process, self-promotion, development of applications to grants and awards, relation with clients: Editorial, Galleries, etc.

Group session: lecture followed by Q&A | 4 hrs

Thea Traff’s group seminar will be based on how to have an effective working relationship with a magazine’s photo editor (such as the best practices to maintain while on assignment, how to pitch your work and stay in touch), how to overcome creative roadblocks and eventually how to make standing out portraits in an image-saturated world: the importance of being informed about the history of the medium and pulling references from this history when producing your own work.

Individual session | 20 mins each | to be scheduled and arranged in advance with the lecturer

Questions about the proposals, portfolio reviews and support to the participants’ efforts. Specific topics to be arranged between the guest and the student.

In addition to this single session with Thea included in the starting package, students will be eligible to request additional one-to-one sessions with her (40 euros for each additional ones)

Tristan will share his knowledge of photography from the perspective of the art world and why, in this realm, it is important to think about the photograph as a physical object rather than a transient image. This will include his experience of selling prints, focussing on considerations about pricing and editioning work and the role of commercial galleries, art fairs and collectors, in particular the private collection he curates, The Incite Project.

Individual session | 20 mins each | to be scheduled and arranged in advance with the lecturer
